How dental license renewal works

To keep practicing, every licensed dentist has to renew their license with the state board on a set cycle, most commonly every 2 years. Renewal almost always has two parts: completing the required continuing-education (CE) hours for the cycle, and submitting the renewal application and fee to the board before the deadline. Miss the deadline and most boards charge a late fee and move the license to an expired or inactive status until you renew.

The exact CE hours, mandated topics, and renewal deadline differ by state, which is why dentists licensed in more than one place have to track each separately. Pick your state above for the deadline, the CE you need, and the official renewal portal, or see the full dentist CE requirements by state →
